Walking the streets on 1930s London

Portia Adams: sleuthing the streets of London

UNITED KINGDOM | Monday, 4 May 2015 | Views [219] | Scholarship Entry

I write 1930s detective fiction and this March break I got the opportunity to actually track through my protagonist's steps. My detective (Portia Adams) mysteriously inherits 221 Baker Street upon the death of her mother and immigrates from Toronto to London. So on my trip I visited many of the places I have only been able to research up until now. I of course visited Baker Street and the Conan Doyle museum, but I also spent an afternoon in Regents Park where Portia takes her dog on walks and Old Scotland Yard where she works with the police of the day to solve crimes. I visited The Strand to capture the types of restaurants she would have enjoyed and many train stations to get a sense of her commutes all over the city chasing criminals. It was a fantastic trip and has made my writing (I think) all the more authentic!
