Underwater treasure

Sipadan Island

A complete new world opened up when I made my first dive in South France when I was 17. All that fish, those beautiful colours, the
restful sound of your own breath; it was all fascinating to me.

A few years later I got my diving license at the Whitsundays in Australia and from that moment on I try to discover the underwater at different places at least once a year. I did some dives in Thailand, Vietnam, Honduras, the Galapagos islands and Egypt. But the most memorable, impressive place to dive - my Travel Treasure - is Sipadan Island in Malaysian Borneo. It's impossible to describe what you see and feel in an amazing place like this, but I'll give it a try...

Sipadan is an old vulcano that disappears 600 meters into the sea. The coral walls are immensely and you can look into the depths for miles. At the same time you see many hamerhead sharks, huge turtles, stingrays, massive schools of barracudas and jackfish and many many other stuff. Your eyes fall short of everything you see at the same time and you don't know if you should look up or down, left or right. An experience you'll never forget!

If you wanna go there you should book your dive in time. I didn't prepare so well and when I arrived in Semporna (the starting point to dive at Sipadan or one of the other islands over there) they told me they were fully booked for the next three months. What a bummer!
Because it's a protected area, only 120 divers a day are allowed and it's quite populair.

Thank God someone didn't show up the next day, so there was one spot left for me. I've dived at Barracuda Point, Coral Garden and Turtle Patch.
