While playing together, two kids exchange something, which triggers the fury of one of the mothers who comes running angrily with a wooden branch in her hand and starts beating up her child while his friends and neighbors stand still watching him being punished. Many children coming across the border are traumatized and some are injured, they spend their days doing nothing and waiting for the unknown… They would kill time in any possible way.

In these camps, there are many unaccompanied minors and youngsters who made the difficult journey without their parents, and who are now dealing with the pain of separation along with other problems. This photo shows how badly children need to dream of a better future and hang on to hope. Syria’s civil war is a very dehumanizing conflict, in which children pay the highest price. Maybe a smile and a flower are all these children have to change their reality. A smile is a sign of hope. A flower is a sign of love, life and peace.

Newly constructed refugee camps are composed of small tents, not bigger than the size of a small bedroom, in which an entire family sleeps. Sometimes it’s a dozen of people all sleeping in a 2.5 square meters room. It’s even worse, especially when new refugees arrive. Older refugees tend to share their space until the new-comers get registered so they can benefit from a new tent. Poverty is rampant throughout this temporary settlement. The number of refugees living without help is increasing, and accommodation is scarce. Access to adequate health care services, water and sanitation is becoming increasingly problematic.
