Two friends, newly met in the refugee camp, happy and have nothing to worry about in Lebanon. People are dying on the other side of the border, but not here. The best thing about being a refugee is that it’s somehow safe, at least safer than Syria where the civil war has not stopped for more than 2 years now… It’s sad to know that these children did not go to school since the beginning of the war; but the situation is so dire for such refugees that it’s easy to overlook the importance of education…

At the age of eleven, this boy, the eldest among his brothers and sisters, is responsible for his family’s small livestock. Since his family lives in an almost deserted house around which the refugee camp is built, he passes through what he considers as “his” old lifeless house and makes use of it as a playground and a pasture to escape the heat of the sun and bring shelter to the cattle.

In these camps, there are many unaccompanied minors and youngsters who made the difficult journey without their parents, and who are now dealing with the pain of separation along with other problems. This photo shows how badly children need to dream of a better future and hang on to hope. Syria’s civil war is a very dehumanizing conflict, in which children pay the highest price. Maybe a smile and a flower are all these children have to change their reality. A smile is a sign of hope. A flower is a sign of love, life and peace.
