The long-tail boats of southern Thailand are famous, as their colorful wrappings and presence among picturesque blue water graces the cover of every tourist book. But behind the colorful wrappings there exists a deeper meaning, as they are utilized for expression for individual boat owners. Each wrapping is unique and speaks to the driver’s personality. This creates a sense of curiosity, as you can’t help but wonder what they are trying to portray.

Asian elephants have become gradually more vulnerable to violence and abuse as their popularity has increased among tourists. The Elephant Nature Park is a rehabilitation center for these elephants that sits among the lush mountains of Chiang Mai, Thailand. This safe haven allows for the elephants to roam on vast acres of untouched land and reconnect with other elephants, while also serving to educate visitors in an effort to prevent such atrocities from continuing in the future.

The southern region of Thailand is formed by a collection of islands separated by vast stretches of ocean. For local fishermen and other merchants, these iconic long-tail boats are vital to their freedom to roam among the islands. Taken during low tide, this picture shows a boat that has been left for the night, but will play a crucial role in its owner’s livelihood upon daybreak.
