It's (Not) All Greek To Me

My Scholarship entry - Understanding a Culture through Food

Food is culture. If we get a better understanding of a cuisine, who prepared it, who eats it, and why then we can learn a vast amount about a culture. Food is a common denominator that connects people, social classes, societies, and the world. Many cultures have traditions that run deep in their cuisine. What may seem like a strange insect to us could be consumed for religious reasons. Either way, if would wish to shed the tourist look then you must be willing to try that culture's food. One must look at it as an invitation to explore something new and expand your mouth's palate.
I recently traveled on a ten day trip to unique five countries with a friend. We have never eaten so much food in our lives. Our diets consisted of chocolates and waffles in Belgium, the best sausage and beer in Germany, and so on. At one stop in Greece because we were not able to read the menu, the chef came to our table and said he wanted to surprise. I will never forget it. He brought out wine, a traditional kelp salad right from the Thessaloniki sea, three main dishes, and dessert all for us! We did not hesitated to dive in. Hands down, it is one of my favorite times abroad. This was no Olive Garden. It was the real deal. The chef sat down with us and explained how many authentic Greek dishes are disappearing and it was his goal to save his countries natural cuisine. I felt honored I could share this moment with him.
Food brings many cultures together. You do not need to speak their native language or have an understanding of what is in the dish. The only thing you need is a daring personality and courage. That is all that separates you from possibly having the best dish in your life.
