My Scholarship entry - Understanding a Culture through Food

WORLDWIDE | Tuesday, 20 March 2012 | Views [206] | Scholarship Entry

One of the most beautiful journey in my life was travelling to Flores, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. I came here because my father comes from there. My father's village named Iliwodo. We flew from Surabaya to Denpasar by using Boeing, and continued to arrive at Haji Hasan Arbusman airport, Ende. We rented the truck to pass the roads. It didn't matter although I was scared actually. But I was entertained as along the way to the sub- districts and villages, on the right and the left side, there are many beautiful valleys and hills. This is the map, there are Detusoko (sub-district), Moni (sub-district), Wolowaru (sub-district), Ndori (sub-district), Wonda (village), Maubasa (village), and Serra Ndori / Iliwodo (village). We stopped by at each places. I liked Moni. It was beautiful. Many orange trees were planted along the streets. I tried to taste it, and it was very sweet. No people would steal it, they could take it freely. And Moni is very near with the legendary lake in the world, Kelimutu. The place was so windy but it was the coolest scene that I've ever known. During my journey, I met the local people with their afro hair. They used saroong and shirt for the men, and sheer cloth with traditional model for women. Some of them were bringing their crops such as corn and cassava, or herding their cattle, mostly were pigs and sheeps. That's why their main food are made from those ingredients. It will cook by using coconut milk most of the time. Sometimes it served with brown rice also. Delicious! The corn will be dried and fried without oil or even pulverized. Crunchy! Meanwhile the meats will be roasted on woods stack. Yummy! People eat fish too and it's boiled by using Indonesian spices such as lemongrass, kaffir lime leaf, or averrhoa bilimbi. It's simple cooking but you will never forget the delicacy. My daily menu was corn, fish or meat, fried worn-bok. For the drink, it was coconut water. Fried banana or custard pineapple for the dessert. Perfect!
