My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

India | Monday, January 14, 2013 | 5 photos

I knew taking photographs was special from the beginning as my parents would only ever let me take a few photographs on their camera. I was told that it was an expensive process.

Fast forward 8 years when I took my first trip overseas. I visited where my Oma and Opa were born. I’d seen photos of their old farmsteads, and then there I was. I positioned my finger and released. That day I realized the real value of a photograph.

I should be chosen for this scholarship because I have never stopped wanting to learn. For thousands of years the best way to learn has been copying masters and learning from them. The Nomads scholarship offers that chance. I specifically would like to learn from Jason Edwards as he is passionate about the present. He creates images that reflect the current mood, and I believe that is the only way to present truth in travel photography.

I’ve moved on from my parents old Kodak and now own a DSLR. I have worked to travel and capture over 5 continents. I could have easily slipped into the snap-happy photographer and shot everything in sight, but I didn’t. Every time I thought about that first lesson; there is value in every photograph.
