Traveling In Japan without knowledge of Japanese - check! Even though many people think that all there is full of hieroglyphs, you'll surprised, how easy it is to find your way in Japan! Off course, when you're in a big city. And even there you have to remember that you'll not find regular adresses or street signs. Have offline working maps on phone, google translate and a big smile!
In Japan there's a lot of places to explore. Foreigners have their own benefits - like JR Pass. It's a special ticket for all JR trains, buses and even ships. You can buy it only in your country, it's not cheap at the first sign, but it's totally worth it - forget about waiting in lines. JR is one of the easiest ways to explore this country. They have it everywhere, so with my pass I was able to go to Hokkaido, Osaka, Enoshima, Hiroshima, Nagano and etc. The other benefit is also that you can always book a place in shinkansen, so you'll always sit.
I guess being in Japan it unusual enough, but I really advise everyone to go to a concert. It doesn't matter if you're into jpop or not - it's just so interesting! Japanese are very polite ad seroious, bt thre, on the concerts, you can see them being wild, happy and free.
Being in Japan and not trying the REAL food of Japan? I don't thinks so! Yes, most people here can not speak English, but they'll give you a support and will be so happy seeing that you enjoy their homemade food.
The best thing is that modern and oldfashioned stuff living together. Teenagers, dressed like anime dolls, and tired salarimens in their formal suites sitting in the train close to the old lady in traditional kimono, but holding the latest smartphone and texting so fast like some children from Russia newer can.
Being in Japan is always being someone else, different, so called Gaijin (foreigner). But you'll soon feel like home, just because it is such a place. Old temples and cemetery, surrounded by skyscrapers; the newest building holding rooms in traditional style.
Tokyo is amazing, but seriously - try Osaka! Kansai people are amazing, funny and open! Hokkaido is a best place to think about life, Wakayama is amazing to think about your own place in this world. I can write and write about Japan, but in fact everyone will find here something titally different, but absolutely amazing. Just hold your map, do not worry and make this step.
