My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

My name is José Ferreira, I am 30 years old and I've devoted my adult life to telling stories. When I was little I wanted to be a teacher, to make a difference by providing education and an example to children. Since then I found out that what I wanted was best achieved by means of pictures and reporting. When done correctly this shows what is the world around us and what is our place - and also how and what can change for everyone. This is why I went to college to become a reporter, even though reporting is starting to be the last thing newspapers do in my country. I come from Porto, Portugal, a place where life is not hard, but has become harder for a series of persons affected by the crisis. In my pictures I try to reach these persons, show how their life is on a daily basis. I do not strip them of their value as a human.
I think I should be chosen for this travel photography scholarship because this is the chance I've been preparing for all my life: the chance to travel, see the world, tell a story. I think my degree in journalism, my knowledge of arabic culture and language and my ability to take pictures that are solid both technically and content wise would be a great plus.
