My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

Photography is meditation and action at the same time. It can involve a great deal of moving about, but requires a stillness of mind. I have loved this about it since my first manual film camera at the age of 14. The ability to manipulate the camera in so many ways was, and still is, its own kind of science to me. Each new shot is an exhilarating experiment. If I am patient and learn to look at the world in new ways, I can freeze glorious moments. Then, by showing them to other people, we begin to uncover our shared humanity. A good picture of a man smiling halfway around the world can make someone else smile as well.
I am constantly striving to better my technique and myself – how can I be faster, lighter, and get exactly the shot I see in my head. Learning new skills is how I am able to produce higher quality work and better convey the messages in my photographs. Having a mentor is something I would find extremely rewarding.
I hope that by traveling to Greenland I can accurately capture both vast landscapes and intimate glimpses into the lives of the people. With enough hard work, I hope to produce a body of work that holds deep meaning for others as well as myself.
