My Scholarship entry - The Uyghur People

I spend my days looking at the world from the inside, looking out. At my desk; trawling the Internet and old National Geographic articles, making long distance calls to Madagascar, Venezuela, Greenland... I research for a T.V. series on tribes around the globe. I love that I can learn about people and places, but researching stories is very different to documenting them on the ground. I’ve been looking to change course—travel photography is where my heart is. For the last few years I’ve oscillated between work and long stints travelling, trying to satisfy a passion for pictures. On my last trip I journeyed East to West across China, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan. I was driven to document what was there, I think not only because the environment were so compelling and foreign, but because I sensed that these places were on the cusp of change. I think that’s why photography is so important to me. A photograph defies time and will be there long after the subject gets old or their culture is swept up by the modern world. I decided that when I got back I would make photography my goal and that’s what led me to finding this opportunity. I have much to learn and I’m eager to get started.
