My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

My pictures depict the tale of a day in the life of a dog at the dog beach. I selected this theme because living in Perth Western Australia, the beach is a favourite for all creatures – furry and five fingered alike.
I have selected images which capture movement, composition and contrast. I also enjoy experimenting with macro.
I’m entering this competition because to put it quite simply, I love taking photo’s! This fact, combined with my passion for travel and meeting new people, makes the prize trip to Bhutan with Jason Edwards an unmissable, once in a life time opportunity.
Photography is a powerful tool which we see in our every day lives, whether it be in the form of art, news, education, advertising or social mediums. In today’s modern society photography enables millions of people around the world to share in beautiful sights which we may never see with our own eyes. Unlike words, pictures need no translation and as the old saying goes “a picture tells a thousand words”.
I was recently inspired by a local Perth couple who travelled to Bhutan and have since published a photo journal which highlights the amazing culture of the Bhutanese people, their sacred festivals, ancient temples and the breathtaking landscape.
This couples story and a selection of their photo’s was published in Perth's local newspaper. Prior to reading this I had no idea Bhutan even existed - it was a real eye opener. I was fascinated to learn about a society which until the 1960’s did not have any infrastructure (roads, paper currency, phones or schools) and in 1999 was the last country to introduce TV.
If I am lucky enough to win this opportunity, the one thing that I would like to give back to society is opening people’s minds to the hidden treasures of the world such as Bhutan.
