At the age of 21 I was living in London, working a boring job and unsure as to my future. By chance I met a boy at a house party who had just returned from a solo round-the-world trip. I couldn't understand how it was possible, I could never do anything like that!
Inspired by this strangers insight I quit my job and travelled solo to the USA for 3 months before returning to the UK to start uni. Having been bitten by the bug, I then travelled solo through South East Asia during my uni holidays, which only made matters worse! Upon my return I found it hard to settle back to normal life and was on count-down to graduation to pack my bags again! After my graduation in 2011 I caught the next flight back to Asia with friends, before travelling on to work in Australia for 9 months, then headed back out to the Far East and India. I returned home in December and hope to teach English in the Far East next year.
I couldn't be more grateful to meeting that boy. He gave me the courage to go it alone. Since then I've consoled a crying prostitute in Las Vegas, survived a tsunami in Thailand, worked as a bikini barmaid in outback Western Australia, lived through a land-slide in Laos, personally castrated several hundred lambs and that's just scratching the surface! It's a shame he'll never know, but I can honestly say he changed my life and I hope one day I can do the same for someone else.
