My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

Worldwide | Tuesday, November 8, 2011 | 5 photos

I'm a PhD student in Ghent and I've taken up photography as, what started as a hobby, a passion. I've grown to learn basic technique as I was experimenting with a brand new Nikon D90, my first DSLR. Taking pictures of friends, documenting trips and travelling the world, it accompanied me on a journey where I learned how to look at the world in a different way.

Finding new photography equipment, talking about it and learning how to use it was enormously fun. To explore what I was capable of in the sense of presenting something in the most interesting way was amazing. To be hungry for new techniques and happy with learning to master basic ones. To be continuously on the lookout for discussions about lenses and be challenged to use them in a beautiful way.

My biggest undertaking was a trip to Indonesia. I saw things I couldn't previously have imagined and was amazed at the sights the world could offer me. Being there, in a strange environment, with my friends and enjoying the experiences. You get to recognize certain views you encounter along the journey as singular events, bright and spectacular, entities that only live for the briefest of moments. Their existence only verified by you taking that special picture. To get up in the morning and appreciate the light that is coming through the curtains, that is what photography brought me. To look at the world and be amazed.
