My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

Growing up in outback South Australia with a large family, photographs have always played an important part in my life. From slides to negatives to digital, photos can be found in all forms in my family home, often showcasing Australia's amazing environment. After finishing year 12 photography with a perfect score, I realised not only was it a passion of mine, but could also someday become part of my career. Ever since I have been the token photographer at every event I have attended, and often feel I spend more time viewing things from behind the lens the actually enjoying them. My passion for travelling, however, is one only recently discovered. Spending three months in Mexico volunteering with the NGO Projects Abroad not only produced this collection of photographs, but cemented my wish to explore the world. An amazing experience, I returned with life-long memories and the burning desire to be gone again, discovering new locations and having more adventures. These photographs were taken to try and capture the contrasts, culture and challenges in I witnessed in Mexico, so on my return I could use them to demonstrate my wonderment to others. I believe the people in photographs often make them what they are, and I was never short of interesting characters to capture during my travels. As a soon to be graduate of a Bachelor Journalism and International Relations degree, photojournalism is a my dream job. Nothing would be more fufilling then integrating my knowledge of reporting with my love of photograhy and fascination of the globe. I hope you enjoy my little slice of Mexico, I suggest you serve with an icy cold cerveza!
