The Fish River Canyon with its prodigious features is found in the southern outskirt of Namibia in southern Africa. Standing at the edge, with its deep beauty stretching as far as the eye can see, you are drawn into the ethereal walls laden with rocks. Nature used his best architect to create this phenomenal landmark.
Its beauty is admired by many on a daily basis. Photographers set up camp near its rim to watch the sun give color to the canyons kaleidoscopic features.
Yearly, during the season from May to September, it also attracts a special kind of species to its exhilarating and tiring 90km trail; the hiker.
Due to its popularity, the trail should be booked well in advance and like any other adventure, you need the right equipment.
Your backpack is your best friend and should not be overloaded with unnecessary items. The same applies when choosing your hiking shoes; they are your companions and should be comfortable, but you have to become acquainted long before commencing the journey.
I can ramble on with no end and give you the perfect inventory of bits and pieces that will make your life easier when hiking the Fish River Canyon. I can ensure you; you will not get it right the first time. As soon as you start packing, your fight or take flight hormones kick in and before you know it, your backpack has been turned into a mini thrift store.
On the 3rd evening of our hike, lying comfortably on the silky sandy beach where our group set up camp, the answer to the question I have been asking myself for a long time suddenly appeared in the millions of stars.
The one item you need to take along on your Fish river canyon hike weighs lighter than the self inflatable mattress and gives a lot more support than the anti-shock walking stick. The secret to a successful hike is team spirit. In every group, whether 3 or 20 people, each individual has weak and strong points. The descent might be a nerve wracking experience to the person afraid of heights, but that person might be the one sacrificing their last drink of water to wipe your face just before heat exhaustion sets in. The person who acts strongest might just be the one who is terrified to swim across a river.
Each individual in a hiking group is like a pillar holding up a building. You are there to recognize each other’s strengths and lend a hand through the weaknesses. This way nobody gets left behind.
There is no gadget you can take along on a hiking trip to replace this.
