My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

Many people would jump at the opportunity to learn from a National Geographic photojournalist, but I would skydive off a plane into the Oman desert if that’s what it takes to be chosen for a mentorship with Jason Edwards.
From the rocky slopes of Mount Lawu to the Pluit slums of Jakarta, I have braved robbers, bed bugs and a student budget to catch a glimpse of the extraordinary. My images are my strongest proof of my commitment to photojournalism. In the past seven months I traveled through Hong Kong, Indonesia and Australia to tell stories of people and places in my blog jessicawritesatravelblog.blogspot.com
As a former photo editor and journalism major, I am aware of the authority I have behind the camera. To shoot a photo is to say, “this is image is relevant, it deserves attention.” Pictures are a universal language and my dream is to tell unspoken stories to connect people everywhere.
If I receive this scholarship, I know the experience will help me pursue goals like sailing across the Atlantic or exploring the pyramids of Egypt.
Courage, determination and empathy are what separate an award-winning photojournalist from an ordinary photojournalist. For Oman, I’ll pack all.
