SHENZHÈN: A CRAZY DAY AT LUÓHÚ COMMERCIAL CITY!

Passport in hand, wheeling a large suitcase and rocking a serious game face, there is only one place you could be headed – Luóhú Commercial City in Shenzhèn, China.
A shopper’s dream, this multi-storey mall is filled with everything you could imagine. Stepping off the train amid the hustle and bustle off other keen shoppers, you are instantly confronted with hundreds of shopfronts. From handbags to clothes, shoes to jewellery and fabric to electronics, be prepared to spend an entire day here. And by entire day, I mean an ENTIRE day!
I had heard so much about Luóhú Commercial City and when I started planning a trip to Hong Kong and Beijing, I knew that Shenzhèn had to be on my itinerary. Having never been to China though, I was aware that bargaining was a huge part of the shopping experience and I knew that the language barrier could be a problem. So I enlisted the help of Tula Mylonas Guided Tours and it was the best decision I made. I was set up with Robyn, an Aussie Expat living in Hong Kong.
I met Robyn at Hung Hom Station in Hong Kong and she made sure that I had all the correct documents. She knew the tricks of the trade and helped me to cross the border and most importantly, knew which shops to visit, which ones to avoid and also how to bargain. I had great success on my day trip to Shenzhèn and walked away with two suitcases filled to the brim.
People are always going to complain that the shop owners are pushy and unpleasant, but having Robyn with me definitely helped. I found everyone to be lovely. The shop owners want to create a return customer, so it’s in their best interest to be honest and provide you with a good product.
I am planning a trip to the UK in November and have already booked my tour with Tula during my stopover. I advise having all of your paperwork ready to go to avoid wasting time filling out these documents upon meeting your tour guide. And be sure to bring your passport and all documents you were given when entering and exiting China – JUST IN CASE! You would hate to be turned around at the border if you don’t have the right information, it has happened before. I also think that booking a hotel for the night of your shopping trip is a great idea. It’s such a huge day and there is always something else that you wish you had bought. Staying the night allows you to relax and make sure you are happy with your purchases.
