Illumination This woman is rinsing her son's soiled shorts and thus, this photo is another example of going about solving daily challenges with grace. For me, however, it's really about catching a moment of illumination. Light abounds in India but moments of illumination are frustratingly fleeting.

Patience - Bus Ride to Bharatpur

This bus ride should have taken 1 ½ hours instead of 5. However, a political protest blocked the main road and our driver decided to venture through the back roads. Unfortunately the roads weren't quite fit for our bus. Eventually a tractor (the second one to give it a go) pulled us out and we went on our way. Remarkably, everyone stayed calm despite these potentially frustrating circumstances. Most waited up in the shade while several passengers helped out with the process of freeing the bus from the mud. Life is hard in India and yet I saw many examples of how people face the daily challenges, both expected and unexpected, with impressive patience.

Color - Bundi, Rajastan:

Color, lines, and shape. It is impossible, I think, to visit India and not be wooed by the colors. These flashes of brightness in saris, turbans, and even the Basmati rice advertisements painted on a whole street of walls, draw one's senses away from the often polluted and decrepit surroundings. And the sari itself is such a graceful garment.
