My friend and her new husband carrying his sword signifies the husband protecting his wife. The entire wedding party and guests walked for over an hour up and down the roads of the village while locals lined the sides of the street. Music was pumped out of a loudspeaker that was carried in a cart behind the party along with its own generator!

I was invited to my friend’s wedding in a small village named Merendeng in South Lombok, Indonesia. She is Canadian and invited her friends and family to this lush beautiful island to perform the ceremony for his family in their native traditions. Little did we know that we were to dress as bridesmaids in their traditional clothes (one size fits all) – equipped with a “doorknob” bun hairstyle circled with flowers as well!

Heavy rains poured down on the celebration but everyone was able to crowd under the tarps until it passed, avoiding the holes above that would splash down on us intermittently. A tradition of theirs is to throw the bride’s underwear on the roof of her husband’s house to ward off rain on their wedding day – it almost worked. Many of the dirt roads remained flooded after we left.
