Florida Unlocked

Sat in a large, warm seven seater, which my family and I called ‘the bus’, with the windows open, occasionally allowing a gentle sea salted breeze to cool us down, I admired the landscape. If I could use an image to describe tranquility, the infinite clear blue that surrounded both sides of the bus would be more than fitting. The image of the glistening sea and the bright omnipresent Florida sun could have been the cover of a CD titled; ‘fifty of the best songs to enjoy whilst relaxing’ or something along those lines.
We jumped out of the a little more than warm car, excited to feel the soft sand in between our toes and sun on our backs, and ran towards the beach.
The beach was empty, apart from two tanned newlyweds. They did not have any other company with them except the minister, the location was more than enough. I almost felt I had invaded a personal moment between the couple, minister and Key West, until the bride waved me over. She asked if I minded taking a photo of them and the picturesque scene. After taking a couple of snaps, I handed the camera back and asked ‘what made you decide to get married here?’ Her and her husband smiled before answering, ‘Who wouldn’t? It’s a perfect place to say the most intimate vows and promises that you’d ever make.’ I understood perfectly. Before I congratulated them and turned back, her husband added thoughtfully, ‘it also feels like God is here, so it still has the feeling of a church.’
Key West was worth the five hour car ride that had induced many family arguments. For the duration of my time, lying back on the sand and observing the scenery, I felt completely relaxed and carefree. One point, after taking my millionth snap of the orange sun, hovering just inches above the now dark but still enticing sea, I was struck by awe. Nothing man-made could have ever been that beautiful, the trip made me appreciate nature so much more than I had previously. If anyone wants to gain insight or experience with the sublime, I, without a doubt, recommend a trip to Key West.
The palm trees that are a Floridian native and are often overlooked, became central to my vision. The palms looked so welcoming, their swaying looked more like a hospitable wave, calling you to venture further into the surroundings. I do wish that I could have spent more than a day in Key West, exploring the museum and community, just to gain more of a cultural insight.
