I noticed on the map the other day that Savannah was surrounded by Military bases and one that stood out was the Marine Air Base about 100km away and just a touch out of the way – well this meant a detour for sure. So I left the hotel at about 7am and it is still dark for about another hour as they still have day light savings and the sun doesn’t rise until nearly 8am - very weird! By the time I get to the Air Base, it is half light and to my delight the main road goes right past the base and the end of the runway is very close to the fence, with a whole squadron of Jet Fighters (F-18/E Super Hornets) clearly in view. So I pull the bike over and park on the road shoulder near some trees, that turns out to be small graveyard. So as I am getting off the bike and taking off my helmet and pulling out my ear plugs and I instantly hear the distinctive whine of jet turbines. Looking through the graveyard trees and through the fence, I can see 2x F-18’s rolling out to the end of the runway. Shit... Shit... Shit... get the camera! So I grab my stuff and run across to the fence, as these jets were about to take off and they were right there - I’m not sure how many graves I ran across in the process... whoops! The jets line up on the runway and I pull out my camera. In horror I see the wide angle is still attached. Shit... Shit... Shit!!!! Like the Ferrari Formula One Team, but with two thumbs, I somehow manage to change lenses before they hit the afterburners. Well after you have a look at the pictures, you can imagine how big my smile was!!!! ;D So I was rapped, as I was hoping to see some jets while travelling the US
