My Photo Scholarship 2010 Entry
Bolivia | Monday, October 18, 2010 | flickr photos
In 2009 I traveled to Bolivia to work as a mountain bike guide on the World’s Most Dangerous Road. I wanted to travel, but couldn’t afford anything exotic or long term due to school loans, so I decided working and spending time in one place would ultimately be a more immersive and long-lasting experience. But this photo essay isn’t about the road; it’s about the other trips in Bolivia on a bike that I was able to experience.
I have been trying to capture quality images since, at the age of ten, my father bought me my first camera, an old Minolta point and shoot. In high school we took a trip to Washington DC; when I went to pick up the prints at the local shop two photos I took with that Minolta of the capitol were blown up and displayed. This sparked in me the hope that one day I could become a photographer by trade. I only took one photo class in college, an introduction to b & w film that used dark rooms and K1000’s. I spent hours shooting and in the darkroom, neglecting other classes and loving every minute of it. I wasn’t able to formally study photography beyond that class; but I still dream of becoming a professional photographer.
I would greatly appreciate this opportunity to learn from a true professional. Except for that one class, I am entirely self taught and would love the opportunity to experience photographic mentorship. Additionally, I have wanted to travel to Bhutan ever since I learned of their unique culture and Gross National Happiness index.
The story I wish to tell of Bolivia is the ruggedness of the country, the people, and the sublime grandeur of mountain biking there. No experience has been more profound or surreal as living and riding there. Thank you for this opportunity.
Sincerely,
Jason Topa
