VIETNAM | Tuesday, 15 April 2014 | Views [189] | Scholarship Entry

At the tender age of 17, I was a weird, outgoing tomboy, who had been homeschooled, travelled around Australia in a van, and had a job as a full-time clown.
I have never been the kind of person who enjoyed normalcy, so when my parents explained that I would be travelling to Vietnam and Thailand with my older brother for my birthday, I couldn't wait to do everything weird.

I did a lot of crazy things during my time in Vietnam. I drank Scorpion and Snake whisky (which I threw up all over the party boat after chocking on one of the snakes scales), I got stuck in the Cu Chi tunnels and had to crawl on my hands and knees behind the tour guide, whilst trying not to let anyone see that I was terrified and having an anxiety attack. I gave more than half of my spending money to beggars on the street because I could't say no to the sadness in their eyes, but the craziest thing that happened was when my older brother, Corey, decided to 'fall in love' with the Swedish girl on our tour. Her name was Anna. She was tall, blonde and drop-dead gorgeous.
In our travel plans, Mum and Dad obviously did not anticipate that Anna would be leaving with us on the end of our tour in Vietnam, so she didn't have flights booked to Thailand. When we were at the airport, somehow Corey and I were separated, and even though we both tell very different versions of the story, the main thing was, I was an eighteen year old girl in a country I knew nothing about, on a plane by myself and had no idea where my brother was, and all I could think was 'how the hell did I end up here?' When I landed in Bangkok, I had a Facebook message from Corey saying he was fine and that he would arrive at the friends house, where we were staying, in the morning.
My friend, Jason, was waiting for me at the airport, but when he saw that I had arrived without Corey, he looked very nervous. After telling him the story of what happened, he laughed it off and tried to calm me down. When we arrived at his house, all I wanted to do was lay down and sleep. Jason showed me to my room, and when I opened my door, balloons and streamers were everywhere, and sitting there on my bed, was my entire family. Mum, Dad, and my three other brothers. It was all apart of a massive surprise my family had planned as a part of the filming for the documentary on our lives. That's why it was a big deal that Corey wasn't there. And to this day, it is still the weirdest and coolest thing that has ever happened to me.
