STOP "F" ON THE TRAVEL MAP (PART 2)
Saturday 4/30/16
The weather finally cleared up nice enough to spend time outside. We headed downtown to walk along the Arkansas River. The downtown has a nice river walk called the “Arkansas Trail” that takes you by the “Keeper of the Plains” statue, the Veteran’s Memorial Park, and many museums, shops and restaurants. We got there around 7:30 PM and walked the trail for a while making sure we were back to the statue by 9:00 PM for the lighting of the “Ring of Fire.” It was beautiful. We enjoyed our time in Wichita; the city is very lovely.
The “Keeper of the Plains” is a sculpture created out of fabricated weathering steel by Blackbear Bosin and donated to Wichita in 1974. It stands in the Arkansas River where his ancestors camped. He wrote, “All living creatures are Indians’ brothers. The Indian lives in complete accord with nature. Everything around him is holy. All Indians feel this. And the sculpture has a way of appealing to all people with that message.”
