I had been in the Philippine’s queen city of the south – Cebu City last November 24 to 27, 2011 for an international conference. After the event, we had our city tour wherein we went to beautiful and historical places.
First we visited the city's most famous landmark which is the Magellan's Cross. This cross is housed in a chapel and reputed to have been planted by Ferdinand Magellan in 1521. Next we stayed to the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño. The church was the first to be established in the islands. Our next stop was the Fort Santiago Cebu City’s Fort San Pedro. I love some aspects of this very old citadel. Then, we went to the Museu Sugbo which has the noble task of reconstructing Cebuano history. Indeed, I was amazed of the rich history and cultural heritage of Cebu.
Our last destination was the Cebu Provincial Detention and Rehabilitation Center to witness the dancing inmates. They are now making a name worldwide and best known for their viral version of Michael Jackson's Thriller video. Afterwards, many other dance routines of popular songs followed.
I really enjoyed much their wonderful performances. It’s good to see their families and friends who support them. As they dance, I saw on their eyes the happiness and homesickness. They hugged and kissed their loved ones. They were given snacks by their families and friends. I was really touched. They are very eager to be totally free and start a new life outside. In the cell, they also do handicrafts such as t-shirt designing and printing, plastic flower making, mat making and other income-generating projects.
I have realized that even if you had committed mistakes there’s always room for a change and a new life. Even though they made mistakes, they can still do many good things and make those mistakes right. They should not be stigmatized in the society and they deserve our respect. Truly, the dancing inmates of Cebu City are making a positive difference in the world.
