NewZealands South Island. Beauty at every turn

A picture of the past, an old boat ramp from New Zealand's whaling history, Kaikoura, New Zealand's east coast. Where the Australian and pacific plates collide, the Hikurangi trench provides a perfect habitat for sperm whales, this trench is just a few kilometres out to sea. This made Kaikoura the perfect spot to hunt the sperm whale which at the time was the most sort after whale due to the fine grade oil stored in the front section of their skull. The oil itself is such a fine grade it was used in expensive watches and as well as being used by the Rolls Royce car company. It was also used in street lamps all over london. today though the whales are protected and numbers are increasing.
