KENYA | Monday, 12 January 2009 | Views [421] | Comments [6]

Hi all,

have tried to upload some photos again  today but the PC's at the internet cafe's are so slow it takes for ever. I have managed ti load one but this took about 30 minutes , I am hoping when I get to a hotel at the weekend that the equipment will be quicker and I can upload more photos as a picture tells a thousand words as we all know, if not the photos may have to wait until I am back in the Uk.

So what has been happening to more over the weekend ? I am not going to bore you with paint stories, just to say progress is good and at the current rate I should complete the job by thursday at the latest.

Saturdays the kids are not at school so I paint in the morning. In the afternoon Caroline took me to meet some American missionary guy who is visiting for a week and may be able to provide some funding to Joy World. He is from Memphis Tennessee with a big booming voice, I like him and hope he will be able to give some help to the school and orphanage.

In the evening I finally catch up with some of the guys from Inspire Kenya and a couple of the other volunteers, Lauren who is an Oz and seems to be taking a break from teaching and doing the world tour and some voluntary work on the way, and Leanne who is from Bridport !! They have all had a big night the night before so are a bit subdued !! However it was good to get out for a few beers and experience my first night out in Mombasa. Not much different to many other cities, lively and busy with lots of bars and music. Good fun.

Sunday is a day of rest ,,,,,,,,fortunately, and many Kenyans go to church of which there are many.

A typical event for Joy world occurred after breakfast with a knock on the door. Outside was a young man with a young boy about three. The man explained to Caroline that he was the boys uncle and looking after the boy after his brother the father of the boy and the mother have both disappeared.

However the uncle has a job and it is hard for him to look after the boy and maintain his work. In Kenya it is normal for orphans to be cared for by their relatives, however the AIDS problem has made this harder .

Caroline agreess to care for the boy for a couple of weeks to give the uncle the chance to make arrangements with other relatives who live up country to care for the boy. He seems like a nice little boy and I hope this will work out well for him.

In the afternoon Caroline takes me to the beach , and this takes a lot longer than I imagined. Two bus rides in all and about 45 minutes. However it was worth it the beaches are stunning, long and full of soft white sand.

Even better Caroline has a friend who does massages from a beach hut and I am treated to a fantastic massage for the princely sum of 10 pounds including tip !!

A day of rest indeed ...............but on with the work today.

Bye for now

Wow Dad,

Sounds like you really are getting on very well, although it sounds like its a world apart from the uk!!

Did you come across my note? i hid it in your bag before you left hoping you would come across it when you unpacked? Maybe i put it in the wrong ruck sack? lol

Nothing much to report back here at home. Lincoln was wicked, me and dem found a lovely four bed house off carholme road near where i was before so we managed to get into the nicer end of town. It really is a great house, looks funny from the outside though, it used to be an old fashioned coop!

Still no idea what to get jonny or u for your birthdays..ideas please?

Have you heard how julies getting on in oz?

I hope you meet some more travellers soon, sounds like you are lacking some company? I am sure the work is keeping you busy!

I cannot imagine the things you will have seen, any wild animals about?

Just at work having my lunch and had to read through all your new posts becasue i have not had the chance to get online for a long period of time.

I hope this week is as interesting as the last, i am sure you will be coaching the boys cricket and telling the girls how to apply their nail polish and eye shadow properly! (tip: if they hit their eyebrows they have put too much on!!) hehe

Cant wait to see you and hear more....

love

Windhoek Calling Mombasa, Come In Please Mombasa?

Hey John,

Great stuff. Took a long time to get through to your blog, but worth every minute! Sounds like you are experiencing the real urban Africa, which is a million miles from the safaris and bungie jumps?

Meme Caroline must be a star, and I am full of admiration for her, and all the ladies like her, who make things happen in such adverse conditions. Also very jealous of you. To get a placement right on the coalface, and to be able to see some tangible end product, (assuming the lady doesn't have another very late change of mind on the colour scheme), is pretty unusual. There will also be many intangible benefits for you and the kids also, I think?

Your stories are bringing back some happy memories for me too. How are you getting on with the mealie? After four years, I still reckon it's an acquired taste? But, the kids are to die for, are they not? Also, glad to hear that the internet cafes are as slow in Mombasa, as in Windhoek. One day.....

So, you are half way through already I guess, and I hope you are enjoying it as much as it would appear. They say Africa gets into your blood, and as long as it's not via HIV, then it's all good and fine! :-)

Not much to report from Nam, as it would all be "old hat" to you now?

Anyway keep the journal going. It's all fascinating reading and a real experience. I'm looking forward already to getting together in March, to share some experiences over an Amurula, or two!

Take care, mate.

Hi John

Glad to hear you are getting on well and that you are meeting lots of new people..

Oh yes - I like the comment about women all over the world changing their mind on the decorating, perhaps it was a case of "selective hearing" re the colour choice, a trait you men seem to adopt more often than not!! Ha Ha

The UK is still fairly chilly you'll be glad to know and the trains are still fashionably late at the moment - so no changes there...

It sounds like you are putting your DIY skills to good use and I'm sure the walls look much improved for a lick of paint.

Keep up the good work

Take Care

Estelle

Hey Juggler

Don't drop those paint cans. I am enjoying reading about your exploits and thought that i would remind you that you missed the Longwick Sports Club meeting on Monday.

I was considering adding the whole meeting minutes to the blog but thought that the high powered, highly confidential, executive decisions should remain outside the public domain. Of course, in your absence, all of the actions have been allocated to you, starting the day that you return.

If you can give Charlie any ideas about what you want for your birthday please let me know too as I am being similarly quizzed by my daughter.

See you at the Club Dinner

Pete
