My Photo scholarship 2011 entry
Worldwide | Monday, November 7, 2011 | 5 photos
My passion for photography began working in photo and camera shops developing for professionals which I still do and through magazines such as National Geographic, where I also first became inspired to see the world and became more aware of environmental and cultural issues. It also gave me a deep desire to make positive changes in the world and I am hoping to do that through photography.
I enjoy every aspect of photography. I never stop learning and strive toward being the best I can be, capturing beauty, emotion, action, and some amazing memories. Often I will photograph family and friends and on the odd occasion get a paid job. But my real passion is in travel and nature. Everywhere I look I’m composing photos, looking at colour and light, even when I don’t have a camera in my hand.
My first overseas trip was Thailand at age 27. I got my first taste of a different culture, trekking through the hill tribe villages in the north near Burma. Then basing myself in London, I travelled throughout the British Isles and Europe; I also spent a couple of weeks in South Africa and Zimbabwe and more recently Indonesia & Samoa. My adventurous spirit usually finds me in caves, hiking and camping, always outdoors.
The 5 photos I have chosen to enter are taken in the NSW Alpine region of Australia, where I spent many school holidays as a child exploring in Autumn and Winter. The Jindabyne Rodeo is an exhibition of unquestionable grit, determination, skill and risk of injury or death. It has developed from the strong history of the great Australian stockman. They once used brumbies for the sport and they still run wild in Kosciusko National Park.
Thank you for this opportunity, and the inspiration.
