My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

My name is Jacqui Evans, and I am a big story teller. I evoke times and places using all the senses we humanly have. Just as in life, we never use only one sense at a time, so my photographic mission is to bring a sense of sound, taste, smell or texture into the colour and movement of the visual medium to express the human experiences we all have every day all over the world. My series of photographs for the Travel Photography Scholarship are called "India: Photography of Sound and Movement". India can be chaotic and incomprehensible, yet it hums to its own internal rhythm. Travel, like life, is a series of sensory moments to be captured, shared and remembered; the sound of a rhythmic drum beat, the percussion of blaring horns and rushing traffic, the slap and spray of laundry washing, or the smell of fresh chai spice. I see myself as a vessel to photographically capture and share these moments that we all experience, which make us all human, connected and alive.
I live in Melbourne, and recently chose to quit my day job as an IT Consultant in order to develop my photography, so that I can do justice to the untold stories which exist out there. The National Geographic & WorldNomads.com Travel Photography Scholarship 2011 would help me to learn to do justice to those stories, which is exactly what I want to do. I cannot wait for the opportunity to start that journey.
I was born in Perth and came to photography later than usual, in my mid-twenties, but have been a storyteller all my life. In my 31 years I have lived in and travelled across many parts of the world. I am fascinated by the common threads of experience that tie humanity together, and have developed a strong desire to capture these photographically.
