My Scholarship entry - Happy Smiling China

China | Thursday, December 27, 2012 | 5 photos

Do I dream to become a travel photographer for National Geographic or any other big name medium? Not really. In fact, I don’t dream anything. I am too old for that stuff. “The adventure of my lifetime” was to raise kids and survive. It doesn’t mean though that I am not willing to learn new things. Just the opposite. I am still trying to learn, still fighting to reinvent myself. I’ve been taking pictures since – to be exact – January 1 1970. I used to be a journalist. Yet I’ve never been a photographer. This could well be my last chance to become one. That’s why I apply. To work with a top travel photographer is of course a unique opportunity…
I don’t pretend that my photos are original. In fact, I don’t like originality much. I think that “creativity” (or “originality”) is one of the most abused clichés. In a world where everything has been photographed zillion times from every angle imaginable (and some unimaginable), we have to live with clichés – to explore them and to use them for our purposes as good as we can. And that’s what I was trying to do: to find good clichés and use them as clichés – rather than to try to reinvent the wheel.
