The Tokyo Metro is an integral part of day-to-day life for the city’s 12 million plus inhabitants. A sophisticated underground labyrinth, the network represents a form of organized chaos. This body of work explores multiple facets of the system – from its physical structure, aesthetic appeal and uniformity, to the human interaction and characters that makes up a day in the life of this vast subway grid.
The idea that you can permanently hold time within an image inspires me to shoot. Cityscapes and architectural photography are where my true passions lie.
After completing secondary studies in 2004, I worked in Western Australia’s North West for several months. This enabled me to self-fund a trip to Europe the following year. These experiences are where my love of photography began. Since this initial trip, I have traveled overseas to various destinations including the United States, Japan and most recently Brazil and Peru. During this time I have also studied in architectural drafting and photography.
I have an insatiable appetite for travel and discovering new places. There are many destinations I plan on travelling to in the future including Russia, the Arctic and Central Asia.
I'm currently in my final semester of study completing a Diploma in Photo imaging - coinciding with this I work part time as an assistant for a commercial photo agency. My sole focus is my work and I'm constantly out seeking to capture images that will connect and resonate with the viewer, long after they have seen them. I aim to create compositions where light, shape, colour, form, texture and backdrop all combine to create an aesthetically intriguing and pleasing image.
After completion of my studies, I plan to pursue a career as an architectural photographer. I'm looking to move abroad next year where I aim to work in this field. My ultimate goal is to live and work in New York City as a freelance photographer. The reasoning for this is that I find it to be the most inspiring, interesting city I have ever visited. Every person has a story to tell and there is an unlimited amount of opportunities and subject matter to shoot.
I have always dreamed of going to Africa and exploring the vast, wild plains of the savannah, through this scholarship I hope to achieve this. My love for photography and travel go hand in hand and I know that I will continue to pursue both of these passions for years to come.
