Documentary Scholarship 2011 entry

There are certain things that come to us when we are in need of inspiration. Sometimes, we must follow and evaluate these things in order to discover the secrets that hide within them. That thing was not actually a thing at all but a person who was picking trash in front of my home in Thailand.

Every day before I would teach I would wake up and wonder where these people would go and why is it that other people are pretending these people don't exist. So, I grabbed my camera and asked to follow them to unravel the mystery. When I arrived, I was in awe of their world. How could so much pollution exist and not so much as a whisper can be heard about it?

As I took each shot, it became vivid to me that nothing was more compelling than the hidden truth. I have tried to make movies about supernatural ideals and utopian worlds but as I put this story together the facts were clear...I would run to the edge of the Earth to find the truth that the world tries so desperately to hide.

Thank you for documenting this problem. Thailand is a developing nation and is likely to produce more and more trash as people progress and modernize. Most people are not aware of this problem. The more people are aware of it, the more likely it is that someone will come up with a solution. That solution would be important to other developing nations as well.
