Skies Stained with Sunsets

My Scholarship entry - Aomori Bay, Japan

When I was a child, I fell in love with books of the world. As a kid I flipped through the pages of these books whilst imagining myself venturing through the Amazon rainforest befriending exotic animals, trekking through deserts in Africa with nothing but a pair of sunglasses, exploring ancient cities in Europe and flying on a magic carpet through the Arabian skies. As I grew older, I felt that I needed more than just these imaginary adventures. I knew I needed to get out and actually experience first hand the cultures that I had been reading about. I needed to taste the food, hear the sounds, talk to the people and embrace the vibrancy of the world around me – and I had realised that my trusty old books of the world simply couldn’t do that for me.

Since coming to this realisation, I've seized every opportunity to travel that has presented itself to me. I've trekked through Europe, visited Asia, and lived for a time in North America. On my travels I've discovered that everywhere we look, the complex magic of nature blazes before our eyes. We're so lucky we're alive to see this beautiful world. Photography, for me, is an attempt to capture the fleeting wonder of the things we see.
