My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

South Africa | Friday, October 15, 2010 | 5 photos

The following set of photos should take you from where you are sitting now, to a place in South Africa- Pretoria, on a normal weekday in a commercial bookshop. There are a few booksellers working at the counter as the shop quiets down as time passes, and leaves only the one or two dwelling souls, sitting on the floor, in between the shelves, immersed in something that takes them away from where they are at that moment. The photos are specifically arranged to be seen in a chronological way. As if you are walking into the shop (photo1), pass the bookseller (photo2), then discover as if it sneaked up on you, how many shelves there are, these categories of life. It is like the books welcome you. (photo 3). Then comes that moment when a certain book catches your eye and you just need to take it out from all the other, why this book? Will it change your life? Will you forget about time(watch) and your surroundings in that moment when you read a piece of it. Or maybe not, but the point is you still need to take that book to find out (photo 4). It is really amazing sometimes how immersed a person can become in a book, who cares who's around you, or that there is a girl taking a photo of you in the far corner, when something is really interesting you want to sit down right there and read it. (photo 5) I should be chosen because I know I have the talent to create a photo that will move a person and at the same time tell a story, But I also know my technical skills lack abit but practice makes perfect, and how better to practice then with Jason Edwards. Since I was a child nothing thrilled me more than watching the special Nat Geo shows that shows you behind the scenes footage, of how far the photographer will go for that shot. I want to be that photographer one day and so far this seems like a really nice stepping stone.
