My Photo scholarship 2011 entry

Berlin:

These photos represent for me what is Berlin. First there is the history. I went to visit a house that had been abandoned just on the outskirts of Berlin and where the bathroom used to be, there was this spider web that took up the entire room. I tried to capture the sense of solitude and forgottenness that comes with abandonment…. Who knows what happened to the people who once lived there?
The second photo is captures the quirkiness of this city. A girls and a clown play around underneath the Warschauer Strasse Bridge.
Berlin thrives on culture and cafés. It’s about the people you meet there as you watching the rain drizzle down outside and the people passing on their bikes or on foot.
The last photo captures Berlin in all its glory, a couple sun baking on the edge of the Spree, on a cold spring day. Next to the handmade beach, the swimming pool in the river and opposite what’s left of the Berlin Wall.

Taking photos and traveling is what I’m passionate about. Magnum and National Geographic largely informed my perspective of the world as a child in Australia and an opportunity to learn more, to push myself further artistically as well as technically is something that I have craved for long time. I aspire to develop my skills as a photographer to be able to work professionally in this field.
Extensive solo travel in Asia, Europe and the Americas confirmed my passion to discover new places, new people and cultures, their languages and ultimately to capture what I’ve learnt, witnessed and been lucky enough to have had shared with me on film.
