My Scholarship entry - A 'place' I have visited

I am an Australian social scientist who has a keen interest in photojournalism and visual storytelling as a method of reflecting and shaping the myriad different meanings we create about life. I have taken photos from the moment I could afford a camera. As time goes on I realise that the type of camera you have makes little difference to the quality of the photo if you don’t have the right sensitivity, timing and technique. I want to be able to capture photos that speak the truth of the moment, rather than the beauty of software touch-ups. I love that feeling of looking back at shots and being able to say, ‘Wow. That has beautiful composition. It did the moment justice’. My favourite photography occurs in living scenes, on the road, where movement can be felt, in the midst of chaotic events. It is the image rarely posed. It is the photo of the Afgan woman. It is the photo of the yawning seal. It is national geographic. As the saying goes, ‘A picture tells a thousand words’ and I would be overjoyed by the opportunity to become a better photographer learning from a veteran like Jason.
