volcanos of Java

My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

Worldwide | Thursday, October 14, 2010 | 5 photos

Capturing the sacredness of the light as it plays across the landscape has been the motivation behind my photography. I like to define that edge between the physical realities of place and the mystical qualities of the light that befalls it. It is with this in mind that a search for new landscapes to photograph led me to the volcanos of Java, one of the world's most volcanically active regions. The photos I have selected for this submission are from this journey.
For some people volcanos would be a place to be in fear of and to stay away from, but for me this was a place to be in awe of. I came to experience this environment, an environment that is represented by the raw and unexpected power that lies within the earth, biding its time, waiting and waiting...before that unexpected eruption. Volcanos have a duel influence upon us, though more often than not they are portrayed for their part in death and destruction, but they are also the great sustainers of life. Volcanos give the land its fertility.
There are many reasons for applying for this scholarship one of which is to gain an insight into the business of further developing and promoting my photography. There would also be a better opportunity to understand the concepts needed in constructing the visual story.
The opportunity of being mentored by Jason Edwards will be of great benefit. This will provide for me much greater insight, perspective and understanding into this aspect of the photographic industry.
I would like to say how much of a priviledge it would be to visit Bhutan; a country which places a greater emphasis on the general wellbeing and happiness of its people.
