Socialize through food

My Scholarship entry - Understanding a Culture through Food

WORLDWIDE | Monday, 23 April 2012 | Views [197] | Scholarship Entry

I've never traveled to anywhere before. But then I have to continue my school in Surabaya, East Java which forces me to live alone in this big city. I am not that afraid, living alone in such a big city like this. Conversely, I take advantages of it to travel around Surabaya. Before the school started, my friends invited me to go to Wisata Bahari Lamongan where take place near the beach. Tired playing all day long in there, we decided to go to Food Festival where sell many foods from different city in Indonesia. I can't stop smiling when we arrived there because finally I could taste various kind of foods from different area in Indonesia without go to the island which take higher cost.   After we got I immediately ordered Soto Lamongan and Soto Banjar. No need waiting for a long time, the waiters came along with the foods that I ordered before. Even though these two Soto have the same name but there is differences between these two foods. First of all is the color, Soto Lamongan is a bit yellow, as for Soto banjar it is purely white. Furthermore, they put Koya which is crackers that mashed along with garlic while in Soto Banjar, there is no Koya. When I ate Soto Banjar, it does remain me the time when I went to South Borneo with my parents. In the morning we bought that Soto for our breakfast. Even I bought this Soto in Surabaya, but the taste of that Soto totally the same with Soto that I ever bought before. Then I realized that we can learn others cultures through food when we taste it. Even though the name of the foods is same such as Soto, but the process of making this food, the tools that they used and the seasoning are different. I do agree if people say that food is social process because it create culture among the people when they cook it.
