I work as a Guide Dog Instructor in the UK training Guide Dogs, then pairing them to a suitable blind person. My work is hard and demanding but this is clearly counterbalanced by the satisfaction provided by this challenging role.
I think in a previous life I was a Nomad. I love travelling, from being stuck on a bus in Nepal for 48 hours, travelling across Canada on train, a camel trek through the Sahara desert or trekking the Inca trail.
Over the years I’ve been on several photography courses, meeting new teachers with different styles and interests. I’d like to reach a point where I am not over reliant on ‘automatic’ mode.
With a blind mother, and working with blind people, I’ve learnt to describe things in great detail, intricacies in the environment that people often take for granted, such as describing shades of colour. Whilst sat next to tourists snapping away on wildlife holidays, I’d try and look for the detail in the environment, vegetation with seasonal colours, unusual rock formations, or the local safari driver getting excited about his find. Often my favourite photos are of things that are often over looked, or are ordinary, but I want people to notice them.
