My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

USA | Friday, October 15, 2010 | 3 photos

I am a passionate amateur photographer that specializes in travel, low-light, and particularly the juxtaposition between man and nature. In my submission to WorldNomads, I have captured a unique series of images which I believe strongly conveys a sense of place -- in this case downtown Denver, Colorado. The story, in my mind, is the diminutive "David" of a cathedral standing up to the looming "Goliaths" of adjacent modern skyscrapers. Achieving the desired photographic results was actually quite technical in nature, requring tripod set up and preparation for long exposures. I took it one step further however, waiting for impending summer storms to possibly enhance the background sky. And did they ever. The two images with dramatic lightning strikes can be reasoned to be a product of pre-planning and some skill. The actual positioning of the lightning captured in relation to the cathedral was strictly luck however.

The chance to win this scholarship, let alone have the chance to photograph Bhutan, would be a dream come true. Of anywhere in the world, Bhutan in particular has been on my "list of places to go before I die" ... a place that time forgot, and in many ways like Nepal used to be 50 years ago. I am confident that I could come away with images portraying a unique perspective on the cultural, natural, as well as built environment that is Bhutan. Thank you for considering my entry.
