JOURNEY TO AN UUNKNOWN CULTURE(A BITTER EXPERIENCE)

SIERRA LEONE | Friday, 25 March 2011 | Views [227]

I will also remember in the year 1997 during the civil war in sierra Leone when we have to leave the city to go and seek refuge in the provinces, but every thing turn upside down and we were also attack by the rebels in my mother village and so we have to go in the bush to travel to an another village which is 250 miles off from my mother village.During the time in the bush we have to spent six month there to able to reach our final destination. We suffered a lot in the bush as there was not any food for us there, we only depended on cassava, yams and boil beans with out any ingredients in it.During our suffering we finally reach our destination which was Kailahun District eastern Sierra Leone.

The first bitter experience i had in that unknown culture was the methaod of fetching water, in the city we fetch water from the tap closer to us,but in the province it was a different situation as we have to walk some distance to the stream to fetch water and they also practice a tradition there that nobody should get closer to the stream with slippers in the foot and the slippers must be left some 30metres off from the stream and believe that if somebody get there with slippers the gods will be angry and the water will get dry.And things were not going on well with me as it was difficult for me to adapt to their culture. The second bitter experience i had in that unkown culture was the condition of their bed.In the city the beds are made from sofa and mattress, whiles in that village their bed are made locally from grasses and rice and are laid on the floor which creates breeding places for bed bugs and centipede to leave on.The first night i spent there was the bitter experience i have ever had in my life as i did not sleep that night because of the bites from the bed bugs that made me to have swollen bodies.

The final bitter experience i had from their culture is that they dont encourage strangers and the way they imprison peopl,as my uncle who went with us their did not alsdo understand the culture of the people and so he one day violated one of the laws of the people and so he was`thrown into a square box prison that was` made out of thorns and that did not create any breeding space for him and his whole body was damage and the night he spent there i did not sleep and i have to spend time crying because of the pains he was going through. And that was the bitter experience i had in an unknown culture
