I am unequivocally under qualified for this scholarship.

Like most 25 year olds, I have been planning my career for the past 15 or so years. Turkish oil wrestler, politician, professional footballer, doctor, writer. And listed in chronological order, filmmaker was never on that list.

I am a 25-year-old New Yorker who has lived in 7 countries, and I write this from the road as I wrap up a three-year, twice around the world, teaching-funded trip. But as I was lucky enough to grow up in a nomadic, wayfaring family, this was not my first exposure to the world outside the great US of A.

I have taught myself everything I know about film through online tutorials, videos and field experience. However, I have come to realize that while I have the drive and creativity, I don’t have the resources to put forth the material that I am truly passionate about.

So while I may not be your average candidate for this scholarship, there is no doubt in my mind that I can fill the post in an exceptional and uniquely fresh manner. I want to show my tragically sedentary generation how much their world has to offer, inspiring them through my travel media to get up and just go.

So, twenty-five years into my life, I am not yet a professional athlete or politician, an oil wrestler or writer; but hopefully, through this scholarship, I will become a filmmaker.

I may be raw but I know this is what I want to do with the rest of my life. And I will viciously pursue it until it happens.
