Seek Experiences - Coney Island to Times Square in 60 seconds

USA | Wednesday, 6 November 2013 | Views [225] | Scholarship Entry

On a cold winter morning I took the subway from Manhattan to Coney Island. As a child I imagined Coney Island to be a place where I could roller skate with a crowd of children all day and the hot dogs were free and abundant. However, most of the boardwalk I had read so much about had been damaged by Hurricane Sandy. I could only spot a few children, they were gazing at the roller coasters longingly as if the rides were in a deep sleep but the alarm bell was about to go off and the theme park would once again come alive. The famous Nathan's Hot Dog restaurant had turned into shelter for visitors seeking refuge from the cold/windy weather. I was disappointed to say the least. I quickly boarded the train back to Manhattan and went to a place where Hurricane Sandy hadn't touched, children and adults alike were seen in crowds, the hot dogs weren't free but they were abundant and it was alive as ever.
I imagine New Orleans to be a place where coffee plantations hold secrets waiting to be told, Hurricane Katrina has left her marks in places yet unseen and residents want the city to draw more than the festival seeker. It would be a privilege to have the chance to uncover those stories.
