My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

South Africa | Monday, October 4, 2010 | 4 photos

My photos:
The place I visited was the white sandy beaches of Strand, Somerset West South Africa. I was intrigued by the local fishermen and the underlying theme of survival.
I could see the extreme contrast of beauty and brutality, death and survival, tragedy and obligation. I wanted the images to challenge the viewer and to provoke them to think of a variety of issues such as global warming, the demands of overfishing and to contrast the life of the fish with that of the fisherman.
I noticed that some of the fishermen had tattoos that represented certain gangs in Cape Town. Perhaps the life of the fish was not too far from that of the fishermen? Even in a post-apartheid South Africa, class division is evident, and these fishermen were more than likely living in informal settlements below the bread line, in areas and situations that are life threatening on a day-to-day basis.
The place that I have visited was more than a beach and posed a metaphorical analogy and contrast of what is hidden and what is seen, reality and perspective.
