My Photo scholarship 2010 entry

I looked down at the crowds gathered in the park to celebrate Cherry blossom season. From the top of Osaka Castle, it felt as though I had been transported back in time to the days of the Shogun. Although modern day Osaka raged all around, my view across the moat and fruit grove made the trappings of modern life disappear. I found myself completely captivated by the intricate detail that effortlessly united to create complete harmony. Even in the period of the great warlords, harmony was the fabric of Japanese culture.
These pictures represent everything that Japanese culture is to me: minimalist elements arranged to achieve a beautiful, calm, harmonious environment. Simplicity and harmony.
I have spent my life caring for the sight of other people, and this has meant that I discovered my passion for photography only very recently. I realise that, more than most, I need to fast track my photographic knowledge and skills. I can’t imagine a more worthwhile and intensive learning opportunity than being able to spend an extended period with a professional photographer. While I would highly value the technical aspects, I would most look forward to seeing how a photographer successfully interacts with potential ‘subjects’ – especially when culture and language create a barrier.
I know that working towards professional photography can be a rough and difficult path. Fortunately, I like to travel! This is one journey that I’m prepared to undertake.
