Photography Scholarship 2011

Worldwide | Tuesday, November 15, 2011 | 5 photos

My name is Jason and I am 30 years old.
Looking back on the past decade of my life, it seems that my two greatest loves in life began, developed and progressed simultaneously.
I joined the United States Navy at age 20. I was seeking adventure, experience and a means to “get out into the world”. As far as all of that goes, the Navy turned out to be a great choice.
I decided to separate from the Navy after my commitment was fulfilled, but my lust for travel and adventure only grew stronger with every new place I went.
Eventually, I came to the conclusion that photography and traveling are both itches that can be scratched over and over again, but never go away…and this is exactly what I love. It is what keeps me coming back for more.
Last year, I was called back to active duty and ordered to deploy to Afghanistan. I was less than thrilled about the idea at first, but embraced it as a once in a lifetime opportunity.
It turned out to be one the best experiences of my life.
During my time in Afghanistan, I was able to save up and plan what would be the trip of my life. Over the course of 10 weeks, I visited Australia, New Zealand and Fiji.
I had the time of my life.
I grew up with a large, loving and financially poor family. I have never had much given to me, but I know that determination, passion and willingness to work for what I want is enough to make my dream of being a professional Travel Photographer come true.
I believe this wholeheartedly and I thank you for allowing me the opportunity to participate in this contest.
