My Scholarship entry - A Day at the Office

I did not study photography.
I have never used a DSLR camera.
I had to look up what the word "RAW" means.
So why am I here?
After college, I left on a ten-month adventure throughout SE Asia in hopes that leaving the familiarity of my life in the States would illuminate what I should “do” with my life. And it did.
Studying philosophy made me cripplingly self-aware. But it also allowed me to cultivate an understanding of what I want in life. It gave me the tools to be present in the world. And it affirmed that I have an immense motivation to create—to make something of my own.
However, it was travel that showed me how to apply that understanding. Being able to witness and capture scenes that make the foreign so accessible is empowering. There is an empathy in travel photography that is unmatched in other creative ventures; I love the way it puts the world in your hands (literally), and allows you to share it with others.
I may not know about contrast or aperture, but I am confident in my natural eye for composition and my capacity to connect with my environment. Giving me the chance to learn the technical skills I need to make this newly recognized dream a reality would be a surreal opportunity.
