My Scholarship entry - The Berlin Wall: 25 Years On

Canada | Monday, November 24, 2014 | 5 photos

My name is Hanieh and I am a writer and photographer based in Toronto, Canada. I began to take an interest in photography in high school. I took my first ever photograph with a 35 mm film camera, and since then, I have been drawn to visual storytelling that raises awareness, triggers the imagination and creates discussion. I seek to observe and document the way people in societies unknown to me live and behave. My goal is to inform, persuade and entertain all at the same time. My two greatest passions are traveling and photography, and I would love the chance to explore both.

Ansel Adams said: “You don’t make a photograph just with a camera. You bring to the act of photography all the pictures you have seen, the books you have read, the music you have heard, the people you have loved”. The subjectivity that accompanies the photographic experience allows me to express myself in my work. To treat photography as unsatisfactory and unfinished is to escape mediocrity. It is very likely that the best photograph has not yet been captured. This is what drives me to take a better shot. This scholarship would pave the path for me to become a more recognized and experienced photographer.
